The hardest thing to say is goodbye, but that’s what Lionel Messi has done today. The Argentine had granted a press conference at Camp Nou this morning to bid farewell to Barcelona, the club he joined as a teenager and the only one he’s represented throughout his glittering career. A man famously of few words, it’s was intriguing to hear what the 34-year-old had said.

Barcelona confirmed Messi’s departure on Thursday evening, causing an immense shock amidst the football world. His contract had expired at the end of June, but most believed that a renewal was inevitable. Despite his age, he’s not slowing down; Messi was player of the tournament at the Copa America as Argentina won their first title since 1993, scoring four goals and contributing five assists. Argentina beat Brazil in the final in Rio de Janeiro.

But La Liga’s strict financial controls and Barcelona’s inability to shift deadwood has meant that the Blaugrana couldn’t retain the services of what many consider to be the greatest footballer of all time. He’s expected to sign for Paris Saint-Germain in the coming days, where he’ll reunite with former Barcelona teammate Neymar, while Barcelona enter a new era.

Lionel Messi made this statement during the interview this morning;

Messi: “These recent days I have been thinking about what I can say. The truth is that I can’t think of anything. This is very difficult for me, being here my entire life. I’m not ready for this.”

Messi: “My family and I were convinced that we were going to stay here, at our home. We thought we’d be staying here in Barcelona.”

Messi: “Today I have to say goodbye to all of this. Since I was 13, after 21 years, I’m leaving with my wife and with my three little children. This is our home.”

Messi: “I have no doubt that after a few years out, we will return here. This is our home.”

Messi: “I’m so grateful for the care that people have shown me.”

Messi: “Hopefully one day I can return to the club, to contribute and that Barça continue to be the best in the world.”

Messi: “The best thing now is to answer some questions. Thank you to everyone.”

Messi: “The renewal? It was all done and at the last moment due to the La Liga issue, it couldn’t be done.”

Messi: “It’s exactly like how Laporta explained it.”

Messi: “I did everything possible to stay.”

Messi: “Last year I didn’t want to stay and I said it. This year I wanted to stay and I couldn’t.”

Messi: “PSG? It’s honestly one possibility. I’ve nothing confirmed with anybody. I had a lot of calls from clubs that are interested.”

Messi: “Yes, this is the most difficult moment in my career.”

Messi: “There’s no going back. This is the end here.”

Messi: “I feel sad because I have to leave this club at a time when I was not expecting it.”

Messi: “Barcelona are one of the best clubs in the world. More players will come, not just now but in the future. Like Laporta said, this club is more important than a single person. At first it will be weird, but people will get used to it.”

Messi: “For these fans I’m willing to do anything and yes, I would like to come back in the future and have a tribute.”

Messi: “Tebas? I have nothing to say to him, I never said anything, I have seen him a couple of times and we had a cordial greeting, I have no problems with him.”

Messi: “The people of Barça know me, they know that I’m a winner. The last years of my career I want to keep on adding titles.”

Messi: “The photo with the PSG players? It was a coincidence. It was all just a joke.”

MessI: “I want to congratulate Dani Alves for the Olympic gold that he has won. I’m very close to him.”

Messi: “The club has a very big debt and they don’t want to worsen it. I did my best to stay and it couldn’t. I can’t say more.”

Messi: “We could have achieved at least one more Champions League. One of my goals is to win the Champions League again and more titles.”

Messi: “I had lowered my salary by 50% and then nothing was asked of me anymore. We did everything possible.”

Messi: “They didn’t ask for another 30 percent of salary reduction, that’s a lie.”
