Official : Hertha Berlin forward joins Atletico Madrid on a move until June 2026.
Atletico Madrid Final fee will be €26m plus 10% future sale. Atléti were also considering a move for Moise Kean – but the priority was Matheus Cunha imminently, with the Brazilian having landed in Madrid as he looks to finalise his move.
The Spanish champions will pay around 26 million euros for the 22-year-old, who will sign a five year contract as soon as he passes a routine medical check. Diego Simeone has been after a forward all summer and, having narrowly missed out on Rafa Mir, finally has his wish granted.
Everton were also interested in Matheus Cunha, but Los Colchoneros won the race this time and the Brazilian joins an attack that already boasts Luis Suarez, Joao Felix and Angel Correa as Los Rojiblancos look to defend their title.
It looks to have been third time lucky for Atleti, after missing out first on Rafa Mir and then failing to convince Fiorentina to sell Dusan Vlahovic. Cunha, however, is a different mould of player and not the no.9 that Atleti were supposedly hunting for.
The former Sion and RB Leipzig player can play through the middle but also as a second striker or on the left wing, where he played most of his games for Hertha.
Although he is Brazil Under-23’s all-time top scorer with an impressive 21 goals in 24 appearances, Cunha has never been a prolific goalscorer at club level. In 74 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig and Hertha, he scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists.
