Barcelona have reportedly presented an offer to sign Jose Gaya, who is valued at around €15 million by Valencia, this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Barcelona seem to have made their firs move to swoop Jose Gaya away from Valencia in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old Spanish international is valued at around €15 million by Los Che.

Jose Gaya has come a long way since making his first-team debut for Valencia in 2012, having gone on to become a pivotal figure for the Spanish outfit over the past half-a-decade or so. Such has been the impact made by the 25-year-old full-back that he was also promoted to the role of club captain after Dani Parejo’s departure from the Mestalla last summer.

Till date, Gaya has turned out 258 times for Valencia, chipping in with 6 goals and 28 assists. His overwhelming progress has duly been noticed by some of the biggest clubs in the world and heading into the summer transfer window, it is Barcelona who are showing a lot of interest in signing him.

Junior Firpo’s transfer from Real Betis has not worked out at all, either for Barcelona or for the player himself, with the Spanish full-back failing to make any sort of impact. With Jordi Alba on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the final phase of his career, it is imperative that the Blaugrana start laying down the groundwork for his succession.

To that end, the interest in Gaya makes a great deal of sense, considering the 25-year-old can come in to initially provide competition to Alba before eventually becoming his successor, at a time when he will likely be at the peak of his powers. And, it looks like Barcelona have taken the first concrete step to swoop the Spanish international away from Valencia this summer.

The report suggests that Blaugrana have tabled an offer to sign Gaya, in what is the first formal approach for the Spaniard. The defender’s valuation might not be too excessive for Barcelona either, with Valencia demanding around €15 million for his services.

However, the Catalan giants face stiff competition from rivals Atletico Madrid, who have also made a formal offer for Gaya. What now remains to be seen is if either club manages to pay the required €15 million to land Gaya. Failure to do so, might force them to look at alternatives, with Alfonso Pedraza reportedly being a backup option for Barcelona.
